To start, the first thing you must have of course is an idea, idea as in what category your website is going to fit into.

The internet is a big sea of business's and people trying to make money. If you are an individual with little or no cash to invest in your website you are just another small fish. There is little chance you will be able to compete with the big sharks in the most common product and services markets.

We'll talk more about affiliate programs in the how to choose "how to" section. But first back to this question. So how to choose a website category that can attract visitors and earn you some cash along the way and where to start?

Firstly you should choose something that you have an interest in, even if it is the mildest interest. If you choose a category that you have no interest in, the likelihood is that it would not have your full determination to make it a successful, you possibly would make errors in information or not appeal to your audience/visitors and you will eventually get bored of the whole thing and neglect or totally give up on the website itself. That would be a big waste of your time and resources when you could be putting your full effort and interest into a website that suits your interests.

Secondly it would probably be better if you didn't dedicate your website to the large common services and products categories, the people who dedicate websites to promote the most common internet products and services generally have a vast knowledge of experience on the internet and have been playing the game for a very long time. We're not saying that you yourself can not make money from these common services and products, we just advise you not to dedicate a whole website to these services and products.

In all honesty, the best way to make money is by choosing a category that is specific and not in the very common product or services sector.

For example, one of the team started a website dedicated to garden chairs, yes garden chairs, and it is now very successful through affiliation/reselling for a home and garden company website and has made a lot of money. It seems a very specific product to choose we know, but the point is, the reason it is successful is because it is so specific. For that specific category there is little competition on the internet and so the website gains many visitors that are browsing the internet for garden chairs, and ultimately some of them buy a garden chair or more and our colleague makes some money.

So, if you are interested in say, the drinks business, try to narrow the category down to a more specific product or service, so you could go - drinks < wines < French wines < district/province wines < brand wine - We're not saying that you have to go so in depth, but it would probably be better if you went at least two depths deeper into the initial large category. Another example could be - beauty < women < makeup < facial < lipstick.

Nearly every category of website on the internet, no matter how specific or how general has the potential to make money.

A more general content website can of course still has the opportunity to make money, but this requires alot more time and effort, but if you use network advertising then your results could still be profitable.
